Dubai: A new health initiative to improve fitness among participants was launched by Dubai Municipality on Sunday under the title ‘Yalla Walk\' (Let\'s walk). The largest health awareness campaign of its kind, Yalla Walk aims to attract the public to the 23 walking tracks built by the civic body in various public and community parks all over Dubai. The campaign runs from March 5 to 19.

Engineer Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the campaign highlights the importance of walking as a sport and its health benefits to the members of the community.

"It is a competition but not against other competitors. It is a competition against oneself in which each participant sets his or her own target and works to achieve it," he said. Participants will be divided into three groups, which are children, men and women, and winners in each group will be awarded with nominal prizes.

Lootah said the campaign promises to be a fun family health activity, will be accompanied by special activities for children, while booths allocated along the tracks will offer health services and tests, and sponsors, which will be announced later, will hold demonstrations and education sessions at the parks.

"Walking is an easy and simple sport, which can be practised by children and adults safely, and the sick and healthy. Walking itself is a fun and entertainment, especially if you opt for making it a habit in appropriate natural places.
