It’s a good thing Sarah McLachlan took a lengthy rest because it was anticipated that the whirlwind career she left behind would resume again upon her musical return.
Since the September release of “Fallen,” the first single off McLachlan’s comeback album Afterglow, the Canadian singer-songwriter has been bombarded with requests for interviews and promotional appearances on late night and morning television shows. For the next few months, intense promotion will take her throughout North America and then to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
The single has already become a radio and chart success, an exciting prelude to her fifth studio album due out November 4. McLachlan admits hesitation with returning to an industry that has changed since her departure in 1999, but the first single off her new album sounds like she never left. Afterglow combines the familiar with the new as McLachlan adds her rich vocals to emotional lyrics. For the first time in her career every song was created on piano, not guitar. Although she lost her mother and became a mother to a baby girl during her time from music, the songs on Afterglow do not reflect those personal experiences.
She has been out of the business for a while but the past few years have been spent working on Afterglow with her longtime producer Pierre Marchand. Afterglow follows an album of live hits in 1999, and before that the highly successful Surfacing released in 1997.
It’s no surprise her return was so anticipated. The Lilith Fair creator departed at the peak of her phenomenal career that included three Grammys and six Juno awards and more than 25 million in copies sold worldwide. She has had several hits including “Adia,” “Building a Mystery,” “I Will Remember You” and “Sweet Surrender.”
Our Thoughts
Sarah McLachlan was finally able to set aside the pressure of feeling like she was too long out of the business and began work on a new album for the right reasons – to create music again.
