Pop’s most recent male singing sensation, John Mayer has just completed three months of recording for his sophomore studio album, Heavier Things.

Due out Sept. 9, the album has 10 tracks, some of which Mayer has already introduced to fans at live performances. “Bigger Than My Body” will launch the album that also includes familiar tunes “Daughters,” “Come Back To Bed” and “Something’s Missing.” Mayer has become a popular artist in recent months due to such hit songs as “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “No Such Thing” from his major label debut Room for Squares (2001). “Your Body Is a Wonderland” earned Mayer a Grammy earlier this year for best male pop vocal performance and was a hit on several of Billboard’s singles charts. His latest song “Why Georgia” is also enjoying chart success.

Producer Jack Joseph Puig returned to work with Mayer on his second album that has more electric guitar accompaniment than the first album. Puig’s past career credits include work with Sheryl Crow and No Doubt.

While he waits for his next release, Mayer is busy touring with the Counting Crows, a 42-date trek that will take him through to early September just days before the album’s release.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter grew up in Connecticut listening to pop music but became inspired to learn the guitar after discovering blues. He played the local bars before enrolling at the Berklee College of Music at age 19. Soon he discovered he would rather play music than study it and returned to his adopted hometown of Atlanta to be part of the club circuit. He released an album of acoustic tunes along with studio songs. His amazing performance at the 2000 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas caught the attention of record labels and Mayer soon had his pick. He eventually signed with Aware/Columbia Records and began work on his major label debut Room for Squares.

Our Thoughts

In just over a year, John Mayer has become a musical force to reckon with.
