John Mayer’s first single got him noticed but his second elevated him into superstardom.

The young singer’s recent Grammy-winning song “Your Body Is a Wonderland” has also given him a Top 20 hit and introduced him to audiences of all ages. Now he is invited to mix in music’s elite circles and is in demand to perform for thousands instead of few.

The reality of hitting the big time comes into play further when legends like Elton John request a duet. At John’s annual upcoming Oscar-watching party that generates thousands of dollars for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, John plans to perform with Mayer despite the fact Mayer defeated him at the Grammys last month for the title of best male pop vocal performance. Regardless, Elton John wants to perform Mayer's recent hit song with Mayer as well as one of his own tunes.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter will pair up with Counting Crows for a tour this summer although details have not been released. While on tour, Mayer will perform songs from his major label debut, Room for Squares that has sold more than two million copies since its release in 2001. Last month, Mayer released his first DVD and double CD entitled “Any Given Thursday.” The project documents a September 2002 concert at Birmingham’s Oak Ridge Amphitheater. In addition to featuring some of the hits that made him a household name – “No Such Thing” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland” – Mayer’s DVD also features backstage footage entitled “Any Given Soundcheck,” audio commentary from Mayer and a photo gallery.

John Mayer has combined his skills of songwriting, singing and guitar playing to produce a sound with staying power. In fact, critics suggest his rise from obscurity to growing stardom is based on substance and a knack for playing the guitar.

Our Thoughts

John Mayer is well on his way to becoming a musical icon.
