Polaris Music Prize Longlist Announced, Shortlist Coming Soon

The Polaris Music Prize Long list has finally been announced, and as always, there is a variety of both known and unknown musicians, as well as a demographic pattern.

For instance, from the list below, you will notice familiar names such as Metric, K-Os, Joel Plaskett and of course, Leonard Cohen. However, you may not be affiliated with the likes of newcomers Land of Talk, Beast, and Elephant Stone.

This year's longlist includes a plethora of acts from different parts of Canada, especially a large boom in Montreal. Patrick Watson, the 2007 winner of the Prize and also a Montreal resident, is on the list yet again for his new album "Wooden Arms".

Chad VanGaalen, Metric, Joel Plaskett, K'Naan, Malajube and Wolf Parade are all previous nominees from the past three years that Polaris has been going on.

The Short List will be announced July 7th, and the winner of the $20,000 cash prize will be announced on September 21st.

The winner is determined through anonymous voting of about 178 panelists consisting of music journalists, bloggers, and personalities.Each album chosen is not based on album sales, major record labels or genre, but rather solely on artistic merit.
