Billy Joel has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility, seeking treatment for alcohol abuse.
According to USA Today, his publicist said: "Following a recent bout of severe gastro-intestinal distress, Billy Joel has checked himself into an undisclosed rehabilitation facility for treatment of alcohol abuse. Mr. Joel has asked that his privacy be respected."
This news comes only a month after Joel's publicist denied reports that he was suffering from pancreatitis, a disease frequently caused by heavy drinking, reported the Chicago Sun Times.
This marks the second time the singer/songwriter has entered a rehab facility. In June 2002, Joel checked himself into a New Canaan, Connecticut, substance abuse and psychiatric centre. He later told the media he had entered the facility because of alcohol abuse.
Over the past three years, Joel has been involved in several car accidents. Although none were ever linked to alcohol or drug use, shortly before he entered Silver Hill in 2002 Joel had escaped serious injury in a crash in East Hampton, N.Y.
This was followed by two other accidents, one in 2003 where his car was smashed into a tree along a highway on far eastern Long Island. In 2004 Joel escaped unhurt when he crashed into a house on Long Island.
Joel married his wife, 23-year-old Kate Lee on October 2, 2004 at his Centre Island, N.Y., mansion. Joel was previously married twice, including to supermodel Christie Brinkley. He has had more than two dozen Top 10 hits, including his signature song "Piano Man," which was released in 1973 and became a hit the next year.
In September, Joel's star was placed on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Pantages Theatre, where the Tony Award-winning musical based on his songs, "Movin' Out," ended its run on October 31. He is also a member of the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Our Thoughts
It takes a great deal of strength to admit you have a problem. We wish Billy Joel all the best as he battles his addiction.
